Come with me to Puerto Rico
The holiday hustle is over and it’s the New Year…bleh…nothing until Memorial Day weekend. This seems to be the worst time of the year. For the past 7 Winters, we have been traveling to the Caribbean with good friends in late January – February time frame. We started going to all-inclusive resorts in Riviera Maya, Mexico for the first 2 years and then decided to go to Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico for our 3rd year and fell in love with the experience. This is our 5th year vacationing in Cabo Rojo. We rent a condo, rent a mini-van as there’s 6 of us (4 adults, 2 children), go to local eateries, grill-out, and go beach-hopping.
Here is where we stayed. We have always booked a condo on our own from either HomeAway or Airbnb. We booked this particular condo…actually a penthouse from Airbnb. There was a spacious living room and balcony, 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, swimming pool, and access to beach. The unit also came with access to kayaks.
It felt like home away from home…at least for the 10 days we were there.
Workouts in Paradise
I started my day with an early morning 30 minute workout. Workouts are so much more fun on vacation especially on the beach, right? I always try to make time to exercise even on vacation. It makes me feel not as guilty when I’m eating mozzarella sticks, fried plantains, or ice cream on the beach. LOL.
You don’t need to belong to a fancy gym with lots of equipment. I just grabbed a beach towel (you could use any towel that the unit has), exercise bands, and water.
Our workouts consisted of jogging on the beach and the property and resistance training with bands to work the legs, arms, and butt. Exercise bands are the best thing to pack to quickly get in some exercise during vacation. They are inexpensive, hardly take up any room in your suitcase, lightweight, and you can do so many different exercises with them.
One morning, we did the Indoor Cardio Workout shown below on the left. Boy did we sweat! Our hubbies took the picture of us doing the Indoor Cardio Workout on the lawn in the picture on the right below.
Getting ready for a day of sun and sand
After our morning workout, we put on our bathing suits and sunscreen, and packed the cooler. We also packed beach toys and electronics. Finally, we packed the mini-van and headed to the beach. Once we get to the beach, we set-up shop, turned on some tunes using our favorite new electronic toy, portable waterproof Bluetooth speaker (pictured below) and made it home for the next 5 – 6 hours. Click here for a cheaper alternative for portable Bluetooth speaker.
Why we love Puerto Rico
What we love about Puerto Rico is we’re able to drive to different beaches. Our two favorite beaches that we visit every year are Playa Buye and Playa Sucia. Playa Buye is a very calm and peaceful beach and is very family friendly. Our kids had so much fun snorkeling and playing in water and sand. There’s a snack stand where you can buy smoothies and the best fried foods!
Playa Sucia is not a beach for snorkeling. It’s much more of a beach to jump the big waves, go on a short hike to the lighthouse, play in the sand, and relax on the beach.
After about 5-6 hours at the beach, we drive back to our condo for some r&r and hang out by to the pool. Two evenings, we went to the pool and enjoyed some night swim. It was total paradise!
With our condo having a full kitchen, we saved money by cooking a lot. We grilled meats and ate a lot of rice and beans. We went out to eat one night to a seafood restaurant called Nautica by Polys. Other restaurants were recommended to us but did not have a chance to try includes Buena Vibra and Bamboleio. We will be visiting them next time for sure.
We definitely indulged in their avocados and made homemade guacamole. Check out the size of these babies below!
In the evenings after kids went to bed, we hung out on the patio enjoying the views and sounds of Puerto Rico. And look forward to doing this all over again the next day.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this post. If you’ve never travelled to Puerto Rico, I highly recommend it.
